Juraj Jánošík, a Slovak highwayman, gained fame for robbing nobles and giving the stolen goods to the poor, similar to Robin Hood. Despite discrepancies between his actual deeds and the legend, his story was shaped by activists and writers in the 19th century. Jánošík's tales spread throughout the Kingdom of Hungary and among the Gorals of the Podhale region, solidifying his image as a symbol of resistance. Through poems and films, he became a celebrated figure in Slovak and Czech literature and culture.
