Description:
(Serbian Revolutionary and Freedom Fighter) Karađorđe Petrović, also known as Black George, was a Serbian revolutionary who led the struggle for his country's independence from the Ottoman Empire during the First Serbian Uprising. He distinguished himself during the Austro-Turkish War as a member of the Serbian Free Corps and fought against a rogue governor's invasion alongside the Ottomans. Elected to lead the uprising against renegade Ottoman janissaries, he successfully crushed the Dahi resistance. Despite setbacks, he continued to lead the rebels and sought autonomy from the Ottomans, refusing offers of extensive autonomy in favor of complete independence. After being forced to flee Serbia, he joined a Greek secret society planning to launch a pan-Balkan uprising against the Ottomans. His return to Serbia led to his assassination by a rival rebel leader concerned about the Ottomans reneging on concessions, sparking a feud between their descendants for the Serbian throne.
