Baaba Maal, a Senegalese singer and guitarist, is renowned for his efforts in promoting the traditions of the Pulaar-speaking people living along the Senegal River. He is proficient in playing acoustic guitar and percussion, and has released numerous albums under various labels. Maal's music predominantly showcases lyrics in Pulaar, showcasing his commitment to preserving his community's cultural heritage in the ancient Senegalese kingdom of Futa Tooro. In July 2003, he was appointed a UNDP Youth Emissary in recognition of his contributions.
