Thomas Carlyle was a noted philosopher, historian, mathematician, satirist and essayist born towards the end of the eighteenth century in Scotland. Brought up in a strict Calvinistic family, he moved to Edinburg at the age of fifteen for his university education with the ultimate aim of joining the church. But soon he abandoned the idea to become a mathematics teacher. Later he gave it up to study law, ultimately finding his true vocation as a writer. Meanwhile, he had to go through an intense period of struggle both financially and spiritually, developing a severe pain in his stomach that remained with him for the rest of his life. Beginning his writing career with his contribution to various journals, he wrote his first novel, ‘Sartor Resartus’ in his late thirties, acquiring fame with his second major work, 'The French Revolution: A History' at forty-one. Thereafter, he continued writing, often earning brickbats for his non-popular views. He died at the age of eighty-five, wishing to be buried by the side of his parents in Scotland rather than being interred in the Westminster Abbey.
