Al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib, commonly known as Hasan or Hassan, was the eldest son of Ali and Fatimah, Prophet Muhammed’s daughter. He is respected by Muslims as the grandson of their prophet. He is also revered by Shia Muslims as the second Imam. Many of his contemporaries considered him to be the rightful heir to Muhammad’s position of religious leadership. Hasan lived with the prophet for seven years before he passed away. His father Ali became the caliph after the death of Uthman. However, his father was also murdered after some years, after which a large number of Ali’s followers pledged their loyalty to Hasan, because of his connections to Prophet Muhammad. He became known for his kindness and service to the poor as well as for his tolerance and bravery. He lived in Medina for the rest of his life after giving up his caliphate. He died at the age of 45. His wife Jaʿda bint al-Ashʿat is believed to have poisoned him.
