Salvador Sánchez Cerén, also known as Leonel González, was a Salvadoran politician who served as the 80th President of El Salvador from 2014 to 2019. He assumed office after winning the 2014 presidential election as the candidate of the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN). Prior to his presidency, he served as Vice President under President Mauricio Funes. Sánchez Cerén played a significant role as a guerrilla leader during the Civil War and made history as the first former rebel to be elected President of El Salvador.
