Elisabeth of Romania served as Queen of Greece from 1922 to 1924 and actively assisted refugees following the Greco-Turkish War. In Romania, she became the de facto First Lady after her brother's abdication. During World War II, Elisabeth formed ties with the Romanian Communist Party and plotted against King Michael I. Expelled from Romania in 1947, she lived in Switzerland and southern France, where she engaged in a romantic relationship and later adopted a younger artist.
