Description:
(One of the Most Influential Sculptors of the 20th-Century)
A pioneer of modern sculpture, Constantin Brancusi was a Romanian artist and photographer whose remarkable artistry found expression in marble, bronze, metal and wood creations. He was versatile in the use of materials he imbued with a restrained and sensitive style from primitive to sophisticated and avant-garde. From his humble peasant origins in Romania, his journey as the father of modern sculpture took him to France and to fame. He refined his art to elements of sheer simplicity resulting in abstraction in carvings which is evident in his ovoid figures, birds, fish and other sculptures. Resembling primitive African art, his Romanian heritage is visible throughout the elements he used. He strove tirelessly to find the essence of matter and his master craftsmanship is revealed in renowned sculptures such as ‘The Kiss’, ‘Sleeping Muse’, ‘Bust of a Boy’ among others. While Paris became his home, Brancusi's recognition took him and his art to shows in the United States on several occasions. One of the most influential sculptors of the twentieth century, he left behind a legacy of originality.
