Mumtaz Qadri was a member of the Elite Police commando unit and part of the squad responsible for protecting Governor Salmaan Taseer. A devout follower of the Barelvi version of Sunni Islam, he carried out the assassination of Taseer on January 4, 2011. Qadri justified his actions by citing Taseer's defense of Asia Bibi, a Christian woman accused of blasphemy. Following his conviction by the Islamabad High Court, Qadri was sentenced to death and subsequently executed in February 2016.
