(Revolutionary) Thomas McElwee was a member of the Provisional Irish Republican Army who carried out ambushes and bomb attacks on British Army patrols and neighboring towns in Northern Ireland. He was arrested and sentenced to 20 years in prison for possession of explosives and manslaughter. While in prison, he participated in the blanket protest and later joined the 1981 Irish hunger strike, during which he died after 62 days. McElwee's actions and sacrifice have been commemorated in various ways, including through songs and the naming of organizations in his honor.
