He was known for his leadership within the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) during The Troubles. McGuinness held positions such as Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland, Member of Parliament for Mid Ulster, and Member of the Legislative Assembly for Mid Ulster. He was instrumental in the Good Friday Agreement, served as Minister of Education in the Northern Ireland Executive, and also ran for President of Ireland. McGuinness resigned in protest over a scandal and eventually retired due to ill health before his passing.
