An Jung-geun

An Jung-geun was a Korean independence activist and pan-Asianist who assassinated Japanese politician Itō Hirobumi, the Resident-General of Korea and first Prime Minister of Japan. He was imprisoned and executed by Japanese authorities for this act. An's actions made him a martyr in both South and North Korea. In 1962, the South Korean government posthumously awarded him the Order of Merit for National Foundation in recognition of his efforts for Korean independence.
