Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari was a seasoned Nigerian politician who started as a teacher and transitioned into politics in 1951. He served in the House of Representatives from 1954 and held several federal commissioner and minister roles until 1975. Shagari made history in 1979 as Nigeria's first democratically elected president during the Second Nigerian Republic following the handover of power from military head of state General Olusegun Obasanjo.
