Sushil Koirala

Sushil Koirala was a Nepalese politician and a former Prime Minister of Nepal. He held the office of Prime Minister from February 2014 to October 2015. His cousins who served as Prime Minister of Nepal were Girija Prasad Kirala, Matrika Prasad Koirala and Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala. One of the scions of the most notable Koirala family of Nepal, who are distinguished for their service in Nepalese political and societal sectors through generations, Sushil Koirala played an active role in Nepalese politics since 1954. After the royal takeover in 1960, he remained in exile for sixteen years. During his exile he stayed in India and edited his party’s publication, ‘Tarun’. He was incarcerated in Indian prisons for three years due to his role in the 1973 plane hijacking. He held several significant positions in the ‘Nepali Congress’ party including the General Secretary, the Vice President and finally the President of the party - a position he served till his death in February 2016.
