He held the WBC bantamweight title from 1976 to 1979 and earned a reputation as one of the most powerful punchers in boxing history. Zárate was honored as Fighter of the Year by The Ring magazine in 1977, ranked #21 on The Ring's list of greatest punchers, and named the #1 bantamweight of the 20th century by the Associated Press in 1999. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1994.
