After winning the world championship, Barrera successfully defended his title for many years and gave the world several memorable fights. Despite intermittent breaks, he returned to the ring with success. However, an injury in 2008 troubled him enough to take a leave of absence for a long period. At this juncture, Barrera started an alternate career as a boxing commentator for ESPN.
