He oversaw Libya's transition from separate regions to the United Kingdom of Libya and later to a unified state. By forging alliances with Western nations, he promoted economic progress by focusing on the oil sector. Despite his efforts, Idris encountered opposition from rising nationalist and socialist movements, culminating in his removal from power in a coup d'état in 1969.
