Description:
(Greek Philosopher)
Carneades was a Greek philosopher known for leading the Skeptical Academy in ancient Greece. He challenged dogmatic doctrines, particularly Stoicism and Epicureanism, which previous skeptics had not. As scholarch of the Academy, he caused controversy in Rome with his lectures on the uncertainty of justice. Despite leaving no writings, his ideas are known through his successor Clitomachus. Carneades doubted the ability of senses and reason to acquire truth but believed in ascertaining probabilities to guide action.
