Farid Tanios Fata, a hematologist/oncologist originally from Lebanon, was the owner of Michigan Hematology-Oncology (MHO). He became involved in one of the most significant health care fraud cases in U.S. history. Fata was found guilty of prescribing unnecessary chemotherapy to patients and submitting fraudulent charges totaling millions of dollars to Medicare and private health insurance providers. In 2014, he admitted to health care fraud, kickbacks conspiracy, and money laundering. Subsequently, Fata was sentenced to 45 years in federal prison in 2015 for his illegal actions.
