Nāṣīf Yāzijī

Nāṣīf Yāzijī played a significant role in the Nahda movement during the Ottoman Empire era. He began his career as a private secretary for prominent individuals such as Prince Haydar al-Shihabi and Bashir Shihab II. After relocating to Beirut in 1840, he worked as an Arabic tutor and collaborated with American and British Protestant missionaries on translating the Bible into Arabic. Yāzijī later taught at the Syrian Protestant College, focusing on subjects like poetry, rhetoric, grammar, and philosophy. Additionally, he co-founded the Syrian Association for the Sciences and Arts, advocating for Arab independence from the Ottomans.
