Competing in the extra-lightweight (48 kg) class, she secured a total of seven world titles and five Olympic medals, including two gold medals at the Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 Olympics. Following her retirement from judo, Tani was recognized by the International Judo Federation as the "best female judoka ever." In 2010, she transitioned to politics and was elected to the House of Councillors in Japan.
