Marco Pantani was an accomplished Italian road racing cyclist celebrated for his remarkable climbing skills. He was recognized as one of the most skilled climbing specialists in cycling history, holding records for swift ascents at renowned Tour de France locations such as Mont Ventoux and Alpe d'Huez. Pantani was the penultimate cyclist to achieve the Tour de France – Giro d'Italia double. Despite facing doping accusations, he never tested positive but was expelled from the 1999 Giro d'Italia due to abnormal blood values. This event led to a deep depression from which he sadly never recovered.
