Description:
(Soldier) Pattimura, an Ambonese soldier, joined the British Colonial Auxiliary Forces when they gained control of the Maluku islands from the French. After the islands were returned to the Dutch, he led a rebellion in 1817 against colonial oppression. Pattimura captured Fort Duurstede and was hailed as the leader of the Moluccan people. Despite being captured by Dutch forces, he became a symbol of the Maluku and Indonesian fight for independence. President Suharto later declared him a national hero.
