Hector Hyppolite was a Haitian painter known as the "Grand Maître of Haitian Art." Despite being untrained, he transitioned from making shoes and painting houses to fine art painting. His talent was recognized by Philippe Thoby-Marcelin, leading him to work in Dewitt Peters's studio in Port-au-Prince. Hyppolite's work incorporated Vodou themes and attracted the attention of renowned surrealist André Breton. His realistic and religious paintings gained international acclaim, leading to exhibitions in Paris and praise from notable figures like Truman Capote. Hyppolite's prolific career saw him create hundreds of paintings, many depicting Vodou scenes.
