Following her pageant victory, she joined the Guatemalan Party of Labour and became actively involved in left-wing political activism. Cruz developed a close relationship with the party's leader, Leonardo Castillo Johnson, and played a significant role within the organization. However, tragically, her political involvement ultimately led to her abduction and murder due to her association with the party and Johnson.
