Kjell Eugenio Laugerud García was a Guatemalan military officer who served as the 36th president of Guatemala from 1974 to 1978. Before his presidency, he held positions including General Staff of the Army from 1970 to 1972 and Minister of National Defense from 1972 to 1973. As president, he was noted for his relatively tolerant stance towards opposition, his efficient handling of the 1976 earthquake, and his supervision of the rise in oil exploitation in the Northern Transversal Strip.
