Anaximander was a pre-Socratic Greek philosopher, also known as the first person to have developed the idea of cosmology. Though most of Anaximander's works are either lost or have not been preserved, his theories regarding the systematic philosophical view of the world and the universe have been the base of several astronomical theories introduced centuries later. He was a disciple of Thales. Thus, most of his theories originated from his observations. He is regarded as the first person to profess that the Earth is a singular body that exists without any support at the bottom. His theories regarding the structure of the Earth later became the foundation of his two-dimensional representation of the world, the first-ever world map. In addition to astronomy and geography, Anaximander provided theories about evolution and life forms.
