Ottobah Cugoano, also known as John Stuart, was a British abolitionist and activist. He was sold into slavery at a young age and transported to Grenada. Eventually, he was taken to England where he gained literacy and freedom. He worked for the artists Richard and Maria Cosway and became acquainted with influential British figures. Cugoano joined the Sons of Africa, a group of Black abolitionists, contributing to the movement. His professional life was marked by his advocacy for the abolition of slavery and his interactions with key figures in British society.
