Description:
(Politician) José Núñez de Cáceres y Albor was a Dominican revolutionary, writer, and leader of the first Dominican independence movement against Spain in 1821. He used literature as a tool for social protest and anti-colonial politics, being the first Dominican fabulist and one of the earliest criollo storytellers in Spanish America. Núñez de Cáceres published his works in the satirical newspaper El Duende, which he founded. He briefly served as the president of the Republic of Spanish Haiti, which achieved temporary independence before the Haitian Military Occupation of Santo Domingo ended his term.
