He was captured and executed in Valjevo in 1942, with a photograph taken before his execution later becoming a powerful symbol of resistance against fascism during World War II. His image was prominently displayed in the United Nations building in New York. In recognition of his courageous role in the resistance movement, Filipović was posthumously named a People's Hero of Yugoslavia in 1949.
