Calufa, a Costa Rican author and communist political activist, rose to prominence through his involvement in the organized labor movement and the Communist Party of Costa Rica. Starting his career in banana plantations before transitioning to shoemaking in Alajuela, he led a notable strike among banana workers in 1934. Calufa also served as a city council representative and national congressman, actively participating in the Costa Rican Civil War of 1948. Alongside his political endeavors, he gained acclaim as a widely read author, earning prestigious awards for his novels.
