Oscar Arias Sanchez

Description: (President of Costa Rica)

Oscar Arias Sanchez is a former two-time President of Costa Rica who played a pivotal role in bringing peace to Central America. Born in 1940 into one of the most influential coffee-growing families of Costa Rica, his earliest ambition was to become the president. However, as he grew up he decided to become a doctor but soon found that politics and governance interested him more. Therefore, he studied economics and law before joining the government of José Figueres Ferrer as the Minister of National Planning and Political Economy at the age of thirty-two. Thereafter, he quickly climbed the party hierarchy to become the party general secretary at the age of thirty-nine and the president of the country at the age of forty-six. It was during this stint as the president that he helped to solve Central America’s long-standing military problem and received the Nobel Prize in Peace for this accomplishment. Years after leaving the office, he became the President of Costa Rica once again at the age of sixty-six and continued to work for the peace of the region as well as for the prosperity of his nation.
