Deng Xiaoping

Description: (Politician)

Remembered as the Paramount Leader of the People’s Republic of China, Deng Xiaoping was a prominent politician and reformist who led the country to domestic stability and economic growth after the disastrous excesses of the Cultural Revolution. Though he never officially held the position of head of state, head of government, or General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, he nevertheless exerted immense influence and guidance. From 1978 to 1992, he introduced significant changes that propelled China to social, economic, and cultural progress. He raised the standard of living and expanded cultural and personal freedoms. He dominated the foreign ministry and strengthened China’s ties with Western countries. He is credited with transforming China into one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, raising the quality of life for hundreds of millions of Chinese, and laying the foundation for decades of sustained growth. Interestingly, this prolific politician, leader, and reformist had humble beginnings.
