Manuel Bulnes Prieto was a prominent Chilean military and political figure who served as President of Chile twice, from 1841 to 1846 and from 1846 to 1851. He played a significant role in the Chilean War of Independence, achieving military success against the Araucanian Indians, the Pincheira brothers, and Gen. Santa Cruz. As president, Bulnes focused on educational and cultural expansion, founding institutions like the University of Chile and promoting reconciliation after the Civil War of 1829. He also established Fuerte Bulnes to enforce sovereignty over the Magellan Straits.
