Ta Mok, also known as Nguon Kang, was a prominent Cambodian military leader and key figure within the Khmer Rouge regime. He led the national army of Democratic Kampuchea and was commonly referred to as "Brother Number Five" or "the Butcher." Ta Mok was apprehended by Cambodian government forces in 1999 after evading capture with a small group of followers. He remained in government custody until his passing in 2006 while awaiting trial for war crimes.
