He broke away from a polity known as "Java," potentially referencing the island of Java. Jayavarman II created various capitals and triumphed over resistance from local overlords, including the Shailendra Kings. By asserting independence on Chenla's land and progressively increasing his influence from minor kingdoms, he solidified his position as a formidable warrior king in the area.
