Tabinshwehti ruled Burma from 1530 to 1550 and established the First Toungoo Empire through victorious military campaigns. His conquests led to the formation of the largest kingdom in Burma since the decline of the Pagan Empire. By exploiting the riches, workforce, and assets of the lands he conquered, Tabinshwehti gained access to Portuguese mercenaries and firearms. He also sought alliances with the Mons, appointing many to key roles in his administration and military. Following his assassination, his kingdom encountered difficulties despite his accomplishments.
