Aleksandar Stamboliyski, a Bulgarian politician and Prime Minister from 1919 to 1923, was a member of the Agrarian Union. He adamantly opposed Bulgaria's involvement in World War I and upon his release from prison in 1918, he assumed the role of Prime Minister in 1919. Stamboliyski successfully led his party to victory in the national elections of 1920. During his tenure, he prioritized strengthening relations with Europe, resulting in Bulgaria's membership in the League of Nations in 1920. Despite his strong support among the peasant population, Stamboliyski faced resistance from the middle class and military, leading to his removal in a military coup in 1923.
