Decius ascended to the position of Roman emperor in 249 by defeating Philip the Arab. During his reign, he prioritized reinforcing the Roman state and its religious institutions, notably instigating the Decian persecution aimed at Christians. In the final year of his rule, Decius shared power with his son, Herennius Etruscus. Tragically, both perished at the hands of the Goths in the Battle of Abritus.
