Vasil Levski

Vasil Levski, known as the Apostle of Freedom, was a Bulgarian revolutionary who founded the Internal Revolutionary Organisation. He spearheaded a movement to free Bulgaria from Ottoman rule by establishing insurrectionary committees and forming the Bulgarian Revolutionary Central Committee in Romania. Levski, a teacher in Bulgarian lands, promoted his revolutionary ideas and was dedicated to creating a Bulgarian republic based on ethnic and religious equality. Sadly, he was captured by Ottoman authorities and executed in Sofia.
