Vanderlei Cordeiro de Lima, a celebrated Brazilian long-distance runner, is known for his remarkable accomplishments in marathon running. He achieved victories at prestigious events such as the Tokyo International Marathon in 1996 and the Hamburg Marathon in 2004. Lima also triumphed at the South American Cross Country Championships in 1995 and the marathon at the Pan American Games in 1999 and 2003. His exceptional sportsmanship was evident when he bravely continued after being attacked during the 2004 Summer Olympics marathon, ultimately earning the bronze medal and the Pierre de Coubertin Medal. Lima was also honored with the task of lighting the Olympic cauldron at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
