Strobl made headlines by clinching his first World Cup downhill victory with a high start number. By the 1996/7 season, he had become the top-ranked Austrian in the overall World Cup standings. Strobl later switched to representing Slovenia in the 2004/5 season due to challenges within the highly competitive Austrian skiing team. He eventually retired from professional skiing in 2006.
