Rouben Mamoulian was a highly influential American film and theater director known for his groundbreaking use of cinematic techniques. He directed a total of sixteen films, four of which were musicals, and seventeen Broadway productions, with six being musicals. Mamoulian is well-known for his original stagings of popular musicals such as Oklahoma! and Carousel, as well as for directing the first production of George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess. He was widely acclaimed for his innovative use of camera mobility, montage, close-ups, split-screens, and dissolves, although his films tended to receive more critical praise than commercial success.
