Tupac Shakur

Description: (100 Greatest Artists of All Time by Rolling Stone)

Tupac Shakur, better known by his stage name 2Pac, was a highly successful rapper and actor, renowned for his raw, often controversial lyrics that earned him both devoted fans and outspoken critics. Born into a family with a history of legal troubles, Tupac had no contact with his biological father until adulthood. His early life was marked by hardship—his mother, Afeni Shakur, was incarcerated while pregnant with him, and he was exposed to violence and poverty from a young age. Unsurprisingly, his music reflected the harsh realities he witnessed, addressing themes such as life in the ghettos, systemic injustice, police brutality, gang violence, and social inequality. He began his career with the alternative hip-hop group Digital Underground, working as a roadie and backup dancer before gaining recognition as a solo artist. His debut album, 2Pacalypse Now, released in 1991, generated significant controversy due to its graphic and politically charged content. Despite—or perhaps because of—its provocative nature, the album became popular and helped establish him as a powerful voice in hip-hop. Though his professional career flourished, Tupac's life was frequently marred by legal issues and violence. He had multiple run-ins with the law and was famously outspoken about his clashes with the police and the media. In addition to his music, Tupac also showcased his talent as an actor, appearing in several films including Juice, Poetic Justice, and Above the Rim. Beyond his public persona, Tupac was known to be a voracious reader and a fan of literature, particularly the works of William Shakespeare, whose influence can be traced in the emotional and thematic depth of his lyrics. Tragically, his life and career were cut short when he was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996. He died six days later, on September 13, 1996, at the age of 25. His legacy continues to influence generations of musicians, poets, and activists.
