Chadli Bendjedid

Chadli Bendjedid was an Algerian nationalist politician who served as the third President of Algeria from 1979 to 1992. He played a key role during the Algerian War and was a member of the Revolutionary Council. Bendjedid became Colonel in 1969 and later held the position of Secretary General of the National Liberation Front (FLN) in 1979. He was elected as president in the same year and successfully won re-elections in 1984 and 1989. Bendjedid stepped down from office in 1992 following a controversial election that triggered the Algerian Civil War.
