Lounès Matoub, an Algerian Kabylian artist, was recognized for his role in igniting an intellectual movement. He strongly supported the Berber cause, human rights, and secularism in Algeria. Despite his following in specific groups, Matoub was met with disapproval from many in the Muslim community due to his secular and atheistic beliefs and his active support for Berber rights. His assassination by the Armed Islamic Group (GIA) led to tumultuous riots in Kabylia.
