Fauzia Gailani was elected to represent Herat Province in Afghanistan's Wolesi Jirga in 2005, having received the highest number of votes in Herat. Before her election, she had founded a series of fitness centers. Fauzia is a vocal champion against violence towards women and forced marriages for girls, drawing from her own history of being coerced into marriage at a young age. She is known as an independent representative, and her endorsement was being sought by the Karzai administration.
