Ya'qūb ibn al-Layth al-Saffār, a skilled coppersmith, emerged as a prominent military leader and the founder of the Saffarid dynasty of Sistan. He established the capital at Zaranj in present-day southwestern Afghanistan and expanded his territory through military campaigns to encompass regions in modern-day Iran, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, parts of western Pakistan, and a small portion of Iraq. His strategic conquests and leadership were instrumental in the growth and influence of the Saffarid dynasty in the region.
