Martin Luther King III

Description: (Human Rights Activist)

Martin Luther King III is an American human rights activist, community leader, author, and politician. He is one of the four children of the prominent civil rights movement leader Martin Luther King Jr. and his wife Coretta Scott King. King and his three siblings grew up in Vine City, an urban neighbourhood in Atlanta, Georgia. He first faced racism as a child. When he was ten years old, his father was assassinated and the tragedy affected him deeply. King graduated with a B.A. degree in political science from Morehouse College and following his father’s footsteps, immersed himself into the life of an activist. In 1997, he was selected to helm the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), which is a civil rights organization his father had established. He set up Realizing the Dream organisation in 2006, which later became part of The King Center with King as the president. He has been the subject of several controversies, including reciprocal lawsuits against his siblings, with each accusing the others of taking money from funds meant for The King Center. However, King has mended his relationship with his brothers and sisters. In recent years, he has been a vocal critic of the rising intolerance in the US. As a politician, King was elected to serve as the county commission member in Fulton County, Georgia for one term from 1987 to 1993.
