A policeman's son, he absconded from home at eighteen to find work as an actor with the Imperial Film Company. He later turned to writing and began to direct socially conscious films from the mid-1930's. During the 1950's, he made more popular commercial entertainments, including India's first Technicolor feature Aan (1952).
